Custom Knife Class
In our knife making class, you will spend 2-3 days in a one-on-one workshop learning the basics of custom knife making. This class will be in a "follow the leader" style where you and Tony will build the same knife. He will preform an action then you will repeat it. The end result being a brand new custom knife that you made with your own two hands! Classes will be held in our shop in New Orleans.
Day 1: On the first day, under Tony's guidance, you will decide what kind of knife you'd like to build and sketch it out on graph paper. We will stick to a fairly basic, straight forward kitchen or belt knife as this class is mainly intended to show the nuts and bolts of knife construction not to create a world class wonder. We will then layout your design on a piece of steel, cut it out using an angle grinder and de-bur it on the belt grinder. At this point we will drill our holes for handle pins and establish our initial blade bevel. Next, the knife will go into the heat treat kiln for a soak at 1500 degrees and a quick dunk in oil to harden it. This will conclude the first day as the next step requires the knife to go through its 4-5 hour tempering cycle.
Day 2: On day two, we will clean up our newly hardened and tempered blades and grind in the final edge. Next we will pick a handle material from our wide stock of exotic hardwoods, bone and other natural material as well as a range of synthetic materials. (note, if you have a specific material that you'd like to bring in and use, just send us a message so we can make sure it will work on your knife.) Then we will cut and drill the material and fit/pin and glue it to our knives.
Day3: On the third day we will grind our handles to desired shape and put the finishing touches on our blades.
Note: this process can be condensed to two days if needed, it will just be a bit more to take in and will take a little more time each day.
